In 2008 Martin attended a varnish masterclass taught by Geary Baese. Geary’s research into the varnish materials and methods of the great golden period makers of Italy has gained acceptance by some of the best violin makers of this era. Without this unique varnishing system Cremonese violins simply could not have functioned. Since attending this masterclass Martin has relied exclusively on Geary’s recreations of the Cremonese varnish. The result is a varnish which is vibrant, iridescent, full of life and rich with colour.
The varnish is usually shaded just enough to give the impression of half a century of use and loving care. If you wish he can make a more antiqued violin. A fresh, clean, modern look is also available.
